CATalysts – A Promenade Theatre Performance

Embark on an exciting journey with our founders, Jo & Win, as they learn more about their feelings through KidsSTOP™ & Singapore Repertory Theatre’s first-ever STEAM-themed promenade theatre performance, ‘CATalysts’!

Synopsis

Always Question. Always Wonder

Join us for a brand-new theatre experience by Singapore Repertory Theatre, where audiences roam KidsSTOP™ at Science Centre Singapore, to be immersed in an unforgettable STEM learning experience.

Madame Curie, the KidsSTOP™ Cat, has been 'catnapped' by the grouchy inventor Dr FeelBad, whose mission is to make everyone feel bad, always. Recruited by the familiar KidsSTOP™ mascots, Jo and Win, join the adventure, spurred on by Madame Curie’s advice to "Always question. Always wonder”. Venturing by rocket, train and even dinosaur, they set on a rescue mission to bring Madame Curie home and get to the bottom of why Dr FeelBad feels so bad.

Audiences are immersed in this performance by wearing headsets as they walk about from scene to scene guided by actors. Experience a story that helps children (and adults) understand emotions and get hands-on with science experiments in the Splashes of Emotions workshop which takes place after the performance. The workshop explores different mystery liquids and colours and the emotions they represent.

About The Playwright

Rob Johnston

Rob is a playwright and producer based in Manchester, in the UK. He has written over thirty plays staged across the UK and Ireland. Rob won the 2011 Kings Cross Award for New Writing for 'Einstein's Daughter' while his play 'Dark Satanic' won Best Drama at the 2017 Manchester Fringe Festival. Rob has created lots of plays with and for young people, including schools adaptations of Treasure Island, Frankenstein, and The Iron Giant. Before becoming a playwright Rob worked as an engineer in the energy industry and has a degree in theoretical physics - which may or may not have helped in creating CATalysts.

Catalysts Cast

Patricia Gabriel (as Win)

In Patricia’s recent works she has acted as Alice, Caddy and Chorus in Requiem For Change (David Glass), Nym and King of France in Henry V (Adam Marple) and Chorus in Medea (Elizabeth De Rosa), Emily in “POOP!” (Andrew Mowatt), Vanessa Pereira in Army Daze (Revised) (Noor Effendy Ibrahim), Mrs Soames in Our Town (Dean Lundquist) and wrote and devised a solo piece for her NAFA graduation called “Arranged Marriage”.

Patricia aims to create joy through her acting and wants to be a strong advocate for minority representation in the theatre and film industry. She is interested in exploring different cultures in relation to theatre and hopes to travel the world.

Xuan (as Jo)

Xuan is an actor, movement artist and theatre-maker. She graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2018 with a BA (First Class) in Acting.

Recent stage credits include her solo show, Now She Lives, which will be restaged towards the end of this year, Temple (Cake Theatre), The Cat In The Hat (SRT-The Little Company), Stupid Cupid and The Adventures of Abhijeet (Patch and Punnet). Recent screen credits include One Take (Hummingbird Co.) and A Waking (Hei Studios). She believes in being a fiercely unapologetic conduit for all lives whom she is tasked to represent onstage and onscreen.

Eleanor Tan (as Dr FeelBad)

Eleanor’s stage credits include A Twist of Fate, Homesick, Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress, Mad Forest, Top Girls, December Rains, Glass Anatomy, Mama Looking For Her Cat, Hot Pants, Beauty World, Let’s Get Back Together (LGBT), Romance of Mistakes and Don't Know, Don't Care. She recently directed Purgatory, which was hailed as “innovative, edgy and sophisticated”, and a sign that “Singaporean’s opera scene has come of age”.

Eleanor can currently be seen on Mediacorp Channel 5 as Gwyneth Wynn on Kin, and Miss Kuah on Lion Mums 3. She also played the recurring roles of Vivian Lee in the well-loved television drama, Tanglin, and Yan in Point of Entry.

Eleanor is an experienced educator with an MA in Arts Practice and Pedagogy. Her first full-length play, The Book of Mothers, will be featured in Theatreworks' Writers' Lab series in July 2019.
